Filmic, thanks to its location, and expressive by design, this film brings all of its. This is the sublime beauty in the surrealism that is at the core of Mister Limbo, a well-directed movie which surprises with its cleverness its comedy and its fully developed emotion. Limbo is a wry and poignant observation of the refugee experience, set on a fictional remote Scottish island where a group of new arrivals await the results of their asylum claims. But Sharrock’s aesthetics owe more to the visual precision of Aki Kaurismäki, especially the refugee folktale “Le Havre. The existential blues are rich here, paying off in some unexpected ways. The heightened oddness may, in theme and setting, recall the widely loved Bill Forsyth comedy “Local Hero” (1983), which made crucial and rewarding use of a phone booth as well. Limbo is an hellish dimension created from Illyana Rasputins subconscious, where her and Lockheed transported whenever something bad was going to happen. It’s built on fixed camera perspectives, witty arrangements of mute, skeptical faces reacting in unison to one thing or another. His Afghan friend and fellow refugee Farhad (Vikash Bhai, a deadpan ace) nudges Omar toward picking up his instrument, in part so he can become his “agent-slash-manager.” Much of their banter, like their interaction with the initially belligerent locals as well as refugees from Ghana, Libya and elsewhere, reveals Sharrock’s particular comic approach. Rookie policeman Will Ren and the veteran cop Cham Lau are pursuing an obsessive and brutal murderer of women. The movie takes place in the 1970s and depicts a so-called expatriate-group at Trinidad, associated with the oil industry. On the fictional Scottish island - “Limbo” was filmed largely on North and South Uist in the Outer Hebrides - the forlorn young man attends eccentric cultural orientation lessons and bare-bones seminars in job-hunting or Western social norms. Limbo is a Norwegian drama film, written and directed by Maria Sødahl. “It doesn’t sound right,” Omar says at one point, rationalizing why he hasn’t played since he left home.
